Changing goals of nature conservation

During the beginnings of hang- and paragliding, various hunting and conservation societies particularly feared the negative influences which fly might have on the natural environment. Although initial debates on this matter were often heated and emotional, today a more rational and scientific approach is often taken. Several extensive and detailed studies have been made over the past years investigating the influence of hang- and paragliding on the wildlife environment. The results of these investigations offer a solid foundation for discussion and cooperation between pilots and conservation authorities.

Integrating pilots in existing conservation plans has proven to be most successful. For example in the Berchtesgaden National Park, maps indicating nesting sites of eagles are displayed at launch sites, to provide pilots with the necessary information, in order that the eagles may breed undisturbed. Many clubs work together with conservationists (e.g. in cutting and weeding) to maintain their sites, and at the same time maintain valuable natural habitats. Outdoor sportsmen and women are partners with nature conservationists: together important goals can be made reality.
